In the early spring of 2004, I visited Papua New Guinea and Micronesia. The first part of the trip was a land-and-air
based tour of the New Guinea mainland, both coastal plain and highlands. Later, we boarded the Clipper Odyssey for a
cruise of the PNG and Micronesia islands.
Here I am with a Huli Wigman. This Highland New Guinea tribe requires the young men to let their hair grow out.
During the Wig-growing period, these men must sleep with their neck on a pole which keeps their hair off the ground.
After more than a year, the frizzy mat of hair is shaved from the scalp intact and the wig is given to an older man to wear
ceremonially.
