I signed up for a course of study in Florence with the California Community Colleges of the Bay Area.  I was primarily interested in studying Art History, but also had courses in Italian , Italian Culture and a survey in Western Civilization.

I arrived in the beginning of February and returned home in mid-March.  I was able to spend several weekends travelling to other Italian cities.

Every major city has a cathedral (the seat of a bishop) which is "duomo" in Italian, a campanile (bell tower) and a baptistry.

The Duomo and Campanile of Florence.  The dome of the Duomo was built by Brunelleschi starting in 1420.  It was a revolutionary achievement for it's time, and was built without scaffolding.  It served as a model for St. Peters in Rome.
The Campanile was designed by Giotto, known as the most influential precursor of the Renaissance.
The Baptistry is off to the left, an octagonal building sheathed in the same colorful mable as the other two.
