In late February 2002, I photographed in South Florida: The Everglades, Corkscrew Swamp and on the West Coast at "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

The best time to visit the Everglades is in February and March, the dry season, when the water has receded to small ponds where there are greater concentrations of birds and the insects are negligible. It's an added benefit that you don't have to work in the rain, although it may get fairly cool. (Temperatures got down below 50 degrees on a few days).

Alligator

The Corkscrew Swamp near Naples,Florida is home to the largest concentration of Wood Storks in the US. (unfortunately, they roost in trees which are too far from the trail to photograph).
